COMMON QUESTIONS
COST & AFFORDABILITY
Do I need a big budget to get started with AI?
No, and that's exactly why North & James exists. Most AI consulting is priced for enterprise companies with large IT budgets. We work specifically with small businesses, which means our engagements are scoped and priced to fit your reality. Projects start at $2,000, and we're always upfront about cost before any work begins.
How much does AI consulting cost for a small business?
Our projects start at $2,000 for an Ops Audit, a full workflow assessment that maps exactly where automation can help your business most. From there, project packages range based on scope and complexity. Every engagement is fixed price, so you always know what you're paying before work starts. No hourly billing, no surprise invoices.
Are there ongoing costs after the project is done?
Only if you want them. After a project delivers, we offer optional monthly retainers to keep your systems optimized and running. But everything we build is designed to run independently, you're never required to stay on retainer to keep what we've built working.
AI & AUTOMATION BASICS
Can AI really help a business my size?
Yes, and in some ways small businesses benefit more than large ones. You can move faster, implement changes without layers of approval, and start seeing results quickly. You don't need a big team or a big budget for AI to make a meaningful difference. You just need the right starting point, and that's what we help you find.
What's the difference between AI consulting and just using ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a tool. What we do is build systems and automated workflows, connected platforms, and processes that run in the background without anyone having to prompt them. Think of it as the difference between having a useful app on your phone and having a fully automated operation. We figure out where automation fits in your specific business, build it, and help your team use it.
What kinds of tasks can actually be automated?
More than most business owners expect. Common examples include sales follow-up emails, lead tracking, appointment scheduling, internal data entry, customer communication, status updates between team members, and reporting. If your team does the same task more than a few times a week, it's likely a candidate for automation.
Other than AI platforms that are available at accessible cost, probably not. We build on platforms you already own or can access at low cost. In some cases, this work may actually replace existing softwares. We don't create vendor dependencies or require you to purchase proprietary systems.
Do I need to buy new software?
WORKING WITH US
Where do we even start? AI feels overwhelming.
That's the most common thing we hear. Our first step is always a free 30-minute discovery call where we learn about your business and identify one or two places where AI could make a real difference, fast. No jargon, no pressure, just a clear picture of what's possible for you.
I'm not technical. Will I actually be able to use what you build?
Absolutely. We don't hand you a complicated system and walk away. Every engagement includes staff training and documentation. We focus on tools that fit naturally into the way you already work, and we make sure you and your team feel confident before we're done.
The founder does. You won't be handed off to a junior consultant after the sale. The person you talk to on the discovery call is the person who designs and delivers your engagement. Start to finish.
Who actually does the work?
It depends on scope, but most projects are completed within two to six weeks. We start with the Ops Audit, which typically takes one week, and build from there. We're always clear about timeline before work begins, no surprises.
How long does a typical project take?
How long does it take to see results?
Many clients see time savings within the first few weeks after discovery. We prioritize quick wins early in every engagement so you feel the impact before we move on to bigger work. The Ops Audit is specifically designed to identify those fast wins first.
INDUSTRIES & FIT
We work with small businesses across a wide range of industries: professional services like law firms, accounting practices, and consultancies; trades and construction companies; hospitality and events businesses; and growing small businesses in general. If your team handles repetitive operational work and you're looking to run more efficiently, we're likely a good fit.
What industries do you work with?
How do I know if my business is ready for AI?
If your team is losing time to repetitive tasks, leads are falling through the cracks, or you feel like your business could run more smoothly with better systems in place, then you're ready. You don't need to have a clear plan yet. That's what the discovery call and Ops Audit are for.
